Taste- What we ate: a week in food photos

Did I tell you guys that I'm on a diet?! I have been trying to lose weight for a little over three years now. So far so good, I've lost 44 pounds and have roughly another 35 -30 to go. Slow and steady with lots of healthy soups and OA support from my Mom. And that's my plan. I also might have forgot to add I'm a vegetarian too? So if you not discouraged and feeling curious I'd like to show you a glimpse of what's on my plate through an average week:

Thursday was veggie chili. I heart beans in a major way. I don't know why I ever thought they were gross? They are little pockets of miracles as far as I'm concerned.

Friday was fresh pasta with roasted and sundried tomatoes, crunchy basil and that unbelievable burrata mozza from our favourite cheese people down the street.

Saturday morning Vince has been making pancakes and coffee in bed for me. Love him!

Sunday was my first attempt at a pumpkin stuffed with cheese and bread. HELLO!! I made a video about it, that's how great it is. Stay tuned.

Monday was back to soup business with miso, tofu, soba noodles, ginger, cilantro and wakame!

Tuesday was soup continued with roasted cauliflower and swiss chard! So filling and yummy!

And there you have it folks. Add a little meditation and exercise in there and you're all set!

What about you? What's been on your table this week? Any recipes to share?

These are my friends and inspirations from around this crazy blog/internet/twitter/virtual place I call home. I hope you have fun reading what they've been up to this week.

Where not to go for afternoon tea in Paris.

Finally a contender for Best Crossaint in the city.

Was there ever a stronger girl crush than the one I have for this lady?

How does browned butter icing sound to you? Yeah I thought so.

What?! You haven't been to Campagnolo yet?

Chocolate and Paris, a match made in Heaven.

Things you say to your husband in the bathroom.

Wente vineyards on Wino Wednesdays.

How to know if what's going in your mouth is good for you or not.

Who you should have been for Halloween this year. Don't worry there's always next year.

Have a great weekend my friends!!! I don't know about you but I'm getting all excited for Christmas, it's only 1 month and 20 days away! Are you ready?!

Wear Wednesday- My Fashion Lookbook and Pinterest

When I started getting serious about my health and my weight I began to get excited about clothes again. I saw a way back into my beloved fashion world that I had shunned for so long due to my oversized body and XXL self esteem issue.

I got inspired and started my very own fashion magazine of all the looks I loved, coveted and wanted to wear. I know how do you spell N.E.R.D right? I don't care I like little projects like this and thought what the heck maybe other people do too. So here I am sharing.

The outside is pretty boring right? Don't worry what's inside is awesome!

I became obsessed with the above cream Louis Vuitton dress

oh and this yellow J. Crew dress. I eventually got it! In perwinkle blue and I had to add shoulder straps but I got it!

I love classic lady like flats and these were a few of my favs.

And anything camel and leopard, I mean come on that's a no-brainer.

I also had a little makeup section at the back and bought this red lipstick which you can see me wearing here and here.

And a list of things to buy and how to pack by the talented DVF.

But what it's really about is working with what you got. I have an apple shape. In other words, a big belly but lean legs and proportional top. So I hide the belly and show off the clevage and legs. That's how I work with what I've got. Everytime I do this I shave 10 pounds off. I look taller, leaner and happier.
That being said I also think it's important to try a few things fashion experts say you shouldn't. Why not a skin tight red wool dress that highlights your belly? It might just work for you the way it did for me here. (I felt like a million bucks)

Finally it's time to retire the lookbook because I've got an online one now in my Pinterest. It's an addictive online pin board of all your favourite things and I am clearly addicted! Let me know if you're on it, I would love to follow you and if you need an invite I'm your girl! Have fun dressing and loving how you look kiddos, I know I will. (trying anyways ;)

How do you practice self love?

I am slowly learning to be nicer to myself. It's an ongoing thing that's for sure. I have to constantly stop myself from saying mean things every few seconds! Isn't that crazy?! Have you ever really and I mean really listened to the things you tell your self on a regular basis? I challenge you to listen for just ten minutes a day and hear what you hear. It's not good. I say mean stuff mostly about my weight, my hair, my zits, my height, my fashion sense oh my gosh and it doesn't stop there. Apparently I also think I am a horrible wife, friend, sister, daughter who never says thank you enough, who talks to much, who is annoying, who procrastinates....... Geeze!
But usually it's about my belly. How to hide it and how to make it smaller. I even remember a time when I was younger I punched my own belly in frustration at it's size.
That's self hate if I ever heard it!

Since last week I have been listening to my inner voice more and more and telling it to shut up. I am loving myself by replacing these harsh words with softer kinder ones. I have even been saying, "I love you cute belly! thank you for being round and keeping me full and helping me eat and giving me that curvy shape in dresses that my husband loves"
Even though I hardly believe these things. But I will keep saying them and saying them in hopes that just how the negative ones stuck the postitve ones will begin to take over and stay there.

This is how I am trying to be happy now instead of later.

What about you? Do you have love or hate for yourself?

Lighter and Brighter but still down

Barcelona, June 2008

Paris, June 2011

Wednesday is weigh in day for our Biggest Loser season 2 "Revenge of the Maltese Wedding" group. This week I logged a loss of 1.2 pounds! Pretty awesome, right?! Well I wish I felt better about it.

I started becoming an active participant in my weight loss and health care in October 2008. I went to the doctors to get a refill for my birth control pills. She wanted to weigh me and there it was staring me in the face, 245 pounds. I weighed 245 pounds! Since I had recently moved to India with Vince and didn't have a job I got right down to trying to lose weight.

Almost three years later I've lost 45 pounds. But honestly I feel as fat as I always have. I have even more problems with food and eating than before. At least before I was purposely unaware of all the calories and fat I was consumming and enjoying it! Now eating is scary. In my head I hear over and over "Am I eating too much?" "Will I lose my required pound this week?" "Damn it I want that fucking piece of cheese, I'm just going to eat it"

Then the guilt. Oh the horrible guilt.

Well it's got to stop somewhere. I am 45 pounds lighter and I want to enjoy it for goodness sakes. Why do I always want more, faster? I want smaller jeans...bikinis.....eating normally and happily without a care in the world....blah blah blah! If only I could lose 40 more pounds I would be at my goal weight and finally be happy.

Well that's bullshit! I need to be happy now or I am never going to be. How am I going to do that? To tell you the truth I have no idea but I know I can't do it alone that's for sure. Thanks to my Mom I have started food journaling. I also have taken a break from Jillian's 30 day shred and am now only doing fun exercise. Which actually has made a big difference so far.

Does any one else have some other suggestions?

What's yours?

Camille from Svelte Gourmand asks what's your "oh screw it food". Well I have been thinking about it and I was wondering if you can add beverages in that list because I would have to say a nice glass of red wine is my "oh screw it" food. I mean honestly life without red wine.....it's just inhumane!

What about you? What's on your list?

Love and Hugs

P.S. Today is weigh in day and I haven't changed.....I am officially on the longest plateau ever and maybe should consider getting rid of my "oh screw it" food??????? Nah!!! Lifes too short! ;)

Please read her article below or visit her website here.

What’s your “oh, screw it” food?

by Camille on February 16, 2011

rice

I’ve had dietitians inform me dozens (maybe even hundreds) of times that white rice is nothing more than empty calories–that is to say, devoid of any real nutritional value–and should be eaten sparingly, if at all.

You know what? I eat it anyway, at least twice a week, and I don’t stress out about it. It’s delicious (particularly the way my husband makes it, Puerto Rican style: medium-grain, fairly sticky, cooked with some olive or canola oil and a decent amount of salt), and it makes meals so much easier.

This isn’t to say that I eat a ton of rice at a time; I consider it a side dish, and pair it with healthy foods, like black beans and lean beef or vegetable stir-fry and edamame. But in my opinion, life’s too short to not have at least one less-than-perfect food that you consume without guilt–diet rules be damned. What’s yours?

It's that time again!

Aunt Jane bought the 30 day Shred a few days ago on Amazon and it arrived yesterday! She asked me if I would be willing to do it with her and I painfully agreed!
Yesterday morning was the first day of the new Shred and this time we are two! Does anyone else want to join?
I have never done a workout so hard and challenging for your mind and body. I'll admit I cried a little last time. I thought she's crazy, there is no way my flabby body can do that. But I was wrong. It was my mind that was holding me back. My body can actually do a lot if I let it. It's kinda like a spiritual journey too. You know when you are doing Yoga or getting a massage and you suddenly start getting emotional? It's because trauma stays in your cells, on your physical body! You harbour shame and guilt and pain everywhere all over your body and when one of those forgotten places is reached sometimes the flood gates open up! It's so healthy! If that's not enough to convince you, what about this: I lost 9inches and 6pounds last time!
Come on! You know you want to!!!

Weight Watchers weigh in Monday

Good Morning Guys! So you remember where I was last week eh? Well this morning I weighed in at 90.7 kgs or 199.5 pounds! I lost 0.5 pounds! Whooohooooo right? I wish I was happier. I am feeling a little plateau-ey. I checked the weight tracker on my WW online account and I weighed in at 199.5 on Dec 6th so it's been over a month hovering around this same number. I know I have to be patient with my self and weight loss only gets harder the longer you keep at it but come on!

That being said I am feeling stronger this week! During Christmas in France it was so hard to refuse wine and cheese, beautifully made cakes, little apero snacks, sumptuous foie gras and the party just keep going when I got home. I didn't gain a massive amount or derail my train but still I was hoping to keep losing little by little even though it was the holidays.

Back to reality. I have put the wine bottle back in the cabinet (for weekends only) and brought out the soup bowl instead. I am trying my hand at different flavourful soup recipes to take the damp chill out of this Maltese winter and a maybe a few inches off my waist!
We'll see how it goes!
How are you guys doing? How were the holidays on your waistline?!

uh oh! Honeymoon bikini is further away!

My dream bathing suit
The coverup I would wear all the time over the dream bathing suit!

So I weighed in 1 pound heavier this week! This comes after a steady hold on the same weight for the last 3 weeks. I have officially hit my plateau/breaking point! Oh no!

Hopefully I can get back on the train this week and come back here with a loss for you next Monday! I want so bad to wear a two piece bathing suit in 5 months! I only wore one once before in my entire life....when I was 15years old.

Wish me luck!

Weight Watchers 6month Update

Good morning everybody! Today is Monday and that means weigh in day for Weight Watchers. I realize that I haven't been updating you and I don't want you to think I have given up. Not even close! I am still very committed even with that foodie free for all Paris trip.
I set a mini-goal for myself to be under 200 pounds by Dec. 21st which would be my 6month anniversary on Weight Watchers. I am happy to say that I have reached that goal one week early. I am at 199.5 pounds or 90.7 Kgs. I am overjoyed! I haven't weighed under 200 pounds since I was maybe like 21 years old!
All together I have lost 25.1 pounds in the last 6 months and since I started my weight loss journey 3 years ago I have lost a total of 45.5 pounds!
I've started to explore my spiritual side and am feeling more in tune with myself than ever. I think that is also having a wonderful result on my health. I can't thank my partner Vince and my Mom and Dad and Aunt Jane for their support enough! Without you this would never be possible! I am continuing this journey of health so that I may be a better mother and daughter and wife and live a strong long life with all of these people! That's my number one goal!

Love and Hugs

P.S. Did you know just a 10pound weight loss can dramatically change you blood pressure and cholesterol levels! It doesn't take a lot to change your health for the better!

Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'

This is a story of Michael Owens and his weight loss. I love reading the stories on That's Fit. They always bring me into prespective. I have about 40 more pounds to lose and fight for it every day. My struggle is nothing compared to Micheal and his determination! Stop whiming Sam and get going!

Name: Michael Owens

Age:
44

Height:
5 feet, 9 inches

Before Weight:
595 pounds

How I Gained It:
Well, that's the million-dollar question, isn't it? For me, there was no rhyme or reason to why I became nearly 600 pounds -- but there were a lot of the things that caused it to happen and some of these things can still happen today. Over my journey, I've learned that I am an emotional eater, and I have a tendency to punish myself for things I can't control, which adds to this. I was depressed, and I often felt that only food could help. Plus, there's the fact that I often ate enough to feed four people in one sitting, and the more I ate, the more it took to fill me up.

But in the end, I had a hard time blaming myself for what I had become -- I wanted to believe that others were the reason behind it.

Breaking Point:
My breaking point was not being able to breathe, wearing size 76 pants and not being able to fit in our car. I wish I could say it was for my kids, but that would be a lie. While I would die for my girls, they can't be my only reason for living, because if you depend on anything but yourself to motivate you, you could end up with another excuse to quit.

Being overweight and depressed was a living hell. If anyone thinks that overweight people want to be this way, they are grossly mistaken. When you're overweight, you can't walk five feet, you can't fit into your clothes, you're ridiculed constantly and so on. Overweight people don't want to be this way -- it's like any other addiction in that we just can't control it. But it's also just like any other addiction in that you have to want to solve it. If you don't, you'll likely die unhappy.

In the end, it was a decision -- I just decided that enough was enough and I was not going to die like this.

How I Lost It:
My weight went up and down for years, and at one point, I had managed to lose nearly 200 pounds to reach 400. However, the number on the scale slowly crept back up, and once I got close to reaching 450 again, I knew I had to get serious. My weight loss journey really began when I joined the YMCA gym in my area and hired a personal trainer, Chip. I was 441 pounds at the time. If I had not met him and received his guidance, I'm sure I would not be where I am today, although he will never take credit -- he knows he just showed me the tools and I did the hard work. Right from the start, Chip gave me no sympathy. I'm sure he cared, but he wanted to see what I was made of. But now he treats me like a friend -- he even works out with me on his free time. That's someone who truly cares, and it's made all the different.

I work out at least two hours a day (except Sundays), and I do many different exercises throughout the week. Sometimes I run or walk, sometimes I do weights, and usually, I mix up the two. My trainer gives me many different ideas, and I go with it.

Michael Now

After suffering from depression for years, I finally feel like I've mastered my emotional eating, and without a doubt this has been the key to my success. Simply put, I will never ever will allow something or someone to have control over my life -- because in the past, this has just lead to me eating. I'm in control now.

As for my eating habits, I received the best advice I have ever received from one of the other trainers at the YMCA. He told me to mix up the carbs, protein, and fat in my food. I aim for 38 percent carbs, 35 percent protein and 20 percent fat, and it has worked. These days, my go-to foods are usually high-protein things like low-fat peanut butter, chicken, tuna, steak and pork. I don't drink any soda, and I always get lots of water. I also stay away from beer and "empty calorie" foods like popcorn and fast food.

In the end, though, I couldn't have done it without my wife, who's stuck by me for 20 years through it all. I developed some very bad habits that were directly linked to my weight and depression problems, and she was right there by my side through good and bad. She always wanted to hold my hand and kiss me in public, even when I was at my heaviest. She loved me unconditionally. At 150 pounds, she has never struggled with her weight, but she was the one who encouraged me to join the gym. I can't thank her enough.
Awesome Micheal! You are my inspiration!
Love andHugs
If you're struggling with your weight, I'd like to share a quote from "The Shawshank Redemption" that's helped me stay motivated: "Get busy living or get busy dying."

After Weight:
209 pounds

Michael's now just a few pounds short of his goal weight of 200 pounds. He's lost nearly 200 pounds in a year and a half.

Awesome Michael! You are my inspiration!

Love andHugs

P.S. Thanks That's Fit for publishing these stories that keep me going.

Health roundup and how do you measure your health?

My BMI is 31.4. I am considered obese, say what?! If I get my BMI to 29, then I would be just plain overweight! HA! But really. Once you get your BMI into a healthy range (20-25) you eliminate all signs of heart disease and diabetes. (both diseases run in my immediate family!)
I am currently at 206.8 pounds and my goal weight is 170. But then I was reading that a healthy weight range for a girl my age and height is between 132-164. Hmmmmm. I am sticking with 170. My intuition tells me that is my happy weight. We'll see.
My current short term goal is to lose 7.8 pounds by Dec 21st weigh in. That will bring me down to 199 pounds and I haven't weighed that since I was 19 years old! I hope I can do it!
Thanks for all the supprt you guys, I want to be a healthy active mom, wife and friend and I couldn't keep going if you didn't have my back! ( I started this journey at 245 pounds in October 2008)
So I was wondering, how do you measure your health? Scale? BMI? your jeans fitting? Energy levels, hungover days? ;)

Alrighty, back on the train!

Hi guys! I was thinking I would start the 30 day Shred again on the 01st of Nov. Does anyone want to join me? I thought it'd be a nice kick start before the Christmas season. I've still been losing weight on Weight Watchers online and doing my other workouts but I love taking it up a notch everyonce in a while and I think it's time! What do you say people? Are you on the train?

P.S. The job interview went great. I am hoping to hear something this week. Thank you so much for all the encouraging comments.

So what!?!? Have you ever done the same thing?

Yesterday I witnessed myself emotionally eating. I always wondered what people meant when they said that phrase and obviously I had been doing it for years but never knew. I thought it was one of those buzz words that Oprah invented that would be here and gone in a few years.
But then. Vince and I had been working on adopting a precious 8 week old puppy we planned on calling Sunni. Yesterday I got word from my landlord that there was no way I could have a pet in the house. I felt so mad and sad, close to the same feeling as the miscarraige last Feb. And so I drank wine and ate cheese, in the early afternoon. Classic! I said well this is something I CAN control and basically, fuck it! I knew I was emotional eating but I did it anyways.
The thing is I didn't go over my points for the day or derail my diet or anything but I finally figured out that I do do that. And I need to find other ways to make myself feel better for the next time. I hope I have the strenght to turn to meditation next time. Because there will always be a next time! ;-)
The present moment is inevitable!

"Yep, still fat!" The mystery of Phatom fat.

“We become numb to how mean we’re being to ourselves,” Ressler says.

Even though Kellylyn Hicks has lost about 85 pounds over the last year and a half, and gone from a size 24 to a tiny size 4, she still worries she won't fit into chairs.

While out shopping, she fears that she’ll bump her hip into a shelf and break something. A few years ago when she was heavier, she accidentally knocked over and broke a wolf figurine and had to pay $60 for it.

And every morning when she looks in the mirror while getting ready for the day, she sees her former, heavier self. “My brain says, ‘Yep, still fat.’”

“It's been really hard to change my self-image,” says Hicks, 37, of Chesapeake, Va. “I still feel like I'm this enormous person who takes up tons of space.”

While many people are thrilled when they lose excess weight, not everyone is as happy as they expected to be — or as society assumes they surely must be.

Body-image experts say it’s not uncommon for people, especially women, who have lost a lot of weight to be disappointed to some extent to discover that they still aren’t “perfect.” The excess fat is gone when they reach their goal weight, but they may have sagging skin, cellulite or a body shape that they still deem undesirable. Like Hicks, some even continue to see themselves as though they are overweight.

Some specialists use the term “phantom fat” to refer to this phenomenon of feeling fat and unacceptable after weight loss.

“People who were formerly overweight often still carry that internal image, perception, with them,” says Elayne Daniels, a psychologist in Canton, Mass., who specializes in body-image issues. “They literally feel as if they’re in a large body still.”

Daniels and other experts suspect this may happen because the brain hasn’t “caught up” with the new, leaner body, particularly for people who were obese for many years and then experienced rapid weight loss.

“Body image is a lot harder to change than the actual physical body is,” Daniels says.

'Waiting for the other shoe to drop'
Another contributing factor, especially for yo-yo dieters, can be fear of regaining the weight, says Joshua Hrabosky, a psychologist at Rhode Island Hospital who studies body image and counsels obese people undergoing bariatric surgery.

“They’re still in the back of their minds maybe waiting for the other shoe to drop,” he says. People who’ve gained and lost and gained again may be less likely to embrace a new image that they worry won’t last.

Still focused on the fat

Though she’s lost 50 pounds, Nell Bradley, 25, of Atlanta, says she’s more weight-conscious now than five years ago when she weighed 200 pounds.

“I’m so afraid of being that size again,” says Bradley, who exercises three to four times a week and watches her diet to keep her weight in check. She’d like to lose about 10 more pounds.

Even five years later, she still hasn’t shaken the image of her heavier self. “Now I’m down to 155 to 160 and I still feel like I'm at the weight that I was before,” she says. “It's weird because sometimes I'll shop and immediately look for clothes in my size when I was nearly 200 pounds. I always have problems seeing myself in the mirror or in pictures.”

Experts say part of the problem in our body-obsessed culture is that many women — and increasingly more men — have highly unrealistic expectations of what weight loss can do for them. Too often, they think hitting their ideal weight will make them look like a swimsuit model in a magazine, and they’re disappointed when that’s not the case.

People who expect perfection can “get stuck in dichotomous thinking that you’re fat or you’re perfect, and there’s no gray area in between,” says psychologist Leslie Heinberg, who counsels bariatric patients at the Cleveland Clinic. “So if you’re not perfect, you’re ‘fat.’”

'Blind spot' about own body
Heinberg says a lot of her patients who’ve lost large amounts of weight know they have a “blind spot” when it comes to their new body, so they really have to work at believing they look the way others see them.

“It can take years after surgery, after losing weight, for people to really buy that,” she says.

Think of getting a dramatically different hairdo and then doing a double-take upon seeing your reflection in a store window, Heinberg says. “Losing 80 pounds is much more of a cognitive shift than getting new highlights,” she explains.

Counseling may involve challenging distorted ways of thinking about one’s appearance (by studying before-and-after photos, for instance, or bringing out the “fat pants” and seeing the difference in the mirror), learning how to think about oneself in a more positive manner, and working to engage in activities one’s been avoiding.

“You have to look at retraining your brain and understanding that you have been reinforcing this negative image for probably a long time,” says Adrienne Ressler, a body-image specialist and national training director for the Renfrew Center Foundation, which has several eating disorder-treatment facilities around the country.

“We become numb to how mean we’re being to ourselves,” Ressler says.

“We need to learn to appreciate our bodies,” she says. “If we could all look in the mirror and say, ‘Hello, Gorgeous!’ I just think the world would be a better place for women.”

If Tony can do it I can too!

Good Morning everybody! I just got done reading Tony's story at That'sFit. He's just amazing! He did this all on his own while counting calories, food journaling and exercising. He says that he eats what he wants just uses a fork instead of a shovel now! He said when he started walking he couldn't even make it around the block.
I only have 54 more pounds to lose. I look at my stomach every once and a while and even though I know it's changing it's still the big apple shape I have lived with and loathed all my life. I feel like I work out so hard! I often do Jillan's Shred in the morning than another aerobic video in the afternoon. And I still feel like this belly will never budge. But look at Tony. He is a clear example that eating healthy portions and moving your body more works. I just have to keep this up.
If Tony can find the strength and will to lose 229 pounds I can surely find the determination to lose 54 and really believe in it.
If you want to read Tony's personal blog on his continuing weight loss you can find it here.
